The challenge

The high complexity of OHT systems with numerous moving components and real-time requirements makes condition monitoring challenging. The most common causes of wear in overhead hoist vehicles (OHV) include the running and drive wheels, which typically develop flat spots, edge wear or cracks. This often leads to vibrations, tracking problems and additional particle ingress. Furthermore, the guide rollers and bearings are subject to high wear and are particularly susceptible to material fatigue due to the high continuous load.

The solution: Retrofitting your machine or plant

Retrofitting involves equipping your OHT system with appropriate sensors. This includes attaching a microphone to the rails and a camera at a suitable location nearby so that precise acoustic data can be recorded and the passing OHT vehicles can be assigned via the camera. In this way, we obtain the necessary sensor data for subsequent analysis using our AI algorithms.

The wear on OHT vehicles can be precisely detected using airborne and structure-borne sound measurements. The analysis of the data provides concrete indications of bearing damage, imbalances, loose components, typical flat spots, cracks, material abrasion or insufficient lubrication. Periodic knocking or grinding noises also often indicate the onset of wear or misalignment. As soon as a passing vehicle is detected due to its characteristics, a sound measurement is automatically triggered. The measured values are clearly assigned to the respective vehicle either via the position data directly from your existing system or via a camera that detects the vehicle's identification number using optical character recognition (OCR).
